The Paradox of Pakistan

The Paradox of Pakistan

When European countries argue, it's usually about land. Same with India and China's disputes. But with Pakistan and India, it's different. It's about ideas – specifically Pakistan's embrace of militant Islam as a core part of its identity.

The militant Islamic ideology serves two purposes:

  • It gives Pakistan a reason to exist separate from India
  • It holds together Pakistan's different regions and groups

Pakistan can't have peace with India while holding onto militant Islam, but without this ideology, Pakistan might fall apart.

Pakistan has built itself on being 'not India' and on an aggressive religious identity. This identity causes conflict with neighbors while preventing internal collapse.

It's like removing a load-bearing wall from a house – the very thing causing problems is also keeping the structure standing.

This is why simple solutions can't work. Trade deals and diplomatic meetings can't solve this deep identity crisis of Pakistan.
